Who we are

Unbroken Line is a business name of Patrick Fox, a sole trader at 34 Beech Hill Crescent, Donnybrook, Dublin 4, D04 E7R2, Ireland. Patrick Fox decides how your personal data is used, so he’s the “controller”. Contact: hello@unbrokenline.ie.

The free check

The free check runs in your browser. Your answers are saved in your browser’s storage so you can come back to them, and they’re never sent to us. “Clear my answers” deletes them.

Visiting the website

The website is hosted by Netlify, Inc. in the United States. To show you the pages, Netlify records your IP address and browser details in its server logs. We use these only to run a secure website, which is our legitimate interest. We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.

Buying the $49 check

We collect:

  • your name, your email address and your answers on the order form;
  • confirmation of your payment (Stripe handles your card, and we never see the card details);
  • the documents you upload, and anything you tell us by email.

The documents hold details of you and your family: names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death, parents’ names, occupations and addresses.

We use this data to:

  • carry out the check and send your report, under our contract with you (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR);
  • check your relatives’ details as they appear on the documents you chose to send. That’s our legitimate interest and yours (Article 6(1)(f)), and we use their details for nothing else;
  • keep a record of your order and payment, and deal with any complaint or claim (Article 6(1)(c) and (f)).

Some records show a person’s religion, such as a church marriage or a baptism. Some older US certificates show race. These are special categories of data. We process them only because they appear on the documents, and only with your explicit consent, which you give on the order form (Article 9(2)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time. If you do before your report, we stop the check and delete your documents.

Data protection law doesn’t cover people who have died, but we treat their records with the same care.

Your relatives

If your documents include living relatives, this notice explains how we use their details. Contacting each relative would involve disproportionate effort (Article 14(5)(b)), so we publish this notice instead.

Who receives your data

  • Tally, a Belgian company, for the order form and uploaded documents, stored in the EU
  • Stripe, for card payments, under its own privacy policy
  • Zoho, a Dutch company, for email, stored in the EU
  • Netlify, for website hosting
  • Our insurer or professional advisers, only to deal with a claim, and Revenue where the law requires

We never sell your data or use it for marketing.

Transfers outside Europe

Netlify relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, with the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses as a fallback. Zoho’s support staff in India may access stored email to fix technical problems, under standard contractual clauses. Stripe explains its own transfers in its privacy policy.

How long we keep it

  • Uploaded documents: deleted 30 days after your report
  • Your report, order record and emails: six years, the time limit for contract claims
  • Free check answers: only in your browser, until you clear them

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data. You can ask us to correct it, delete it or limit how we use it, or to send it to you in a reusable format. You can object to any use based on legitimate interests.

Email hello@unbrokenline.ie and we’ll reply within one month. You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.

Do you have to give us your data?

Only to buy the $49 check. Without your email, payment and documents, we can’t do it.

Automated decisions

None. The free check’s results are worked out in your browser and have no legal effect. A person carries out every paid check.

Changes

If this notice changes, we’ll update the date at the top.
